Oema foe Sranan / Women of Suriname (1978) is a documentary by Cineclub Vrijheidsfilms and LOSON(1), made in the context of the then recent independence of Suriname. The film follows four women who, through personal stories, tell the history of (neo-)colonialism, imperialism in Suriname, and racism in the Netherlands.
(1) The National Consultation of Surinamese Organisations in the Netherlands
The restored film had its premiere on the 28th of May 2022 during the Meet the Archive day at Eye Filmmuseum.
Simultaneously with the restoration of Oema foe Sranan, a short documentary has been produced, titled Strijd op 16mm (A Battle restored), which captures the stories of the realisation and screening of this underexposed activist film at the time. This short documentary is used to accompany the restored film Oema Foe Sranan (1978).
